Jenny reflects on 17 years with Inclusion WA. Article written August 2017. 

Earlier this week, a colleague popped into my office with an interesting fact. He told me that when I started working with Inclusion WA, he was in preschool.

I was employed by Recreation Network in July 2000 as the Administration Officer. Coming from a background of teaching, then banking, then real estate, then parenthood, I was ready for a new challenge.

The ‘Recreation Network’ administration office was based in Mt Hawthorn at the time, where Recreation Officers were matched with ‘Leisure Buddies’. One of the most significant parts of the role was finding pathways to community activities which entailed printing reams of information from our database in order to navigate buddy goals.  The South East Corridor service was based in Maddington with only two ‘Support Workers’ who would take a number of people living long term in DSC hostels, out into the community for the first time in many years. This was the very beginning of social inclusion.

A new era in my career began in 2009 when Paul Fleay became the 3rd CEO with whom I had worked. As our organisation grew, he felt that we needed a greater focus on getting the right people in the right role and I became the person imparted with this responsibility.

Fast forward seventeen years. I became the longest serving employee of Recreation Network / Recreation and Sport Network and Inclusion WA.

Subsequently it has been my privilege to meet many inspiring people who share my passion and belief that just living without having the best life possible for you, is a waste of a life.

What does the future hold for me? I hope more of the same. Aside from furthering my travel experiences and spending time with the people I love, I wish to continue my ‘longest employee status’ as the Human Resources and Administration guru at Inclusion WA for many years to come.
